Daily-updated supplementary contribution rates, complete history since 2022 and announced changes – straight from the Lohnica API.
On top of the general contribution rate of 14.6%, every statutory health insurance fund charges its own supplementary rate. It is split equally between employer and employee and usually changes at the turn of the year. Across the 97 funds listed here, the current average is 3.37% (as of 09/05/2026).
The contribution rate for statutory health insurance is set by law (sections 241 and 243 of the German Social Code V): the general rate of 14.6% applies to members entitled to sickness benefit, the reduced rate of 14.0% to members without that entitlement – for example certain self-employed people. Both rates have been unchanged since 2015; the fund-specific supplementary rate is added on top and makes the actual difference between funds.
| Period | General rate | Reduced rate |
|---|---|---|
| since 2015-01-01 | 14.6% | 14.0% |
| 2011 – 2014 | 15.5% | 14.9% |
Since 2015 the supplementary rate has been charged as a percentage of income, split equally between employer and employee; before that, funds charged flat supplementary amounts in euros.
