Why Lohnica exists – and who is behind it.
A decade of payroll engineering
Lohnica was founded in mid-2023 by Marius Kreis. His first payroll venture goes back further: in 2016 he started the Berlin-based startup Elohna, a payroll solution for the Swiss market – just one year later, bexio acquired the company. He stayed on as product owner for payroll until 2019, also after bexio itself was acquired by Schweizerische Mobiliar in 2018. Lohnica grew out of that experience – to rebuild payroll for the German market from the ground up.
Simplifying payroll from the ground up
We want to simplify payroll accounting in Germany from the ground up – through consistent automation and an open API. Both run on the same calculation engine: the online payroll software for companies that run payroll themselves, and the payroll API for software vendors that build payroll into their own products.
Precision, speed and simplicity
A complete payroll run happens in real time – in a fraction of a second and always according to the calculation rules currently in force.
The online payroll software is the complete solution for companies; those who prefer to build themselves get the same calculations through the payroll API – including net-to-gross calculations and “what-if” scenarios. The engine behind both is built entirely in-house and maps more than 100 wage types and the special cases of German payroll precisely.
Payroll as a natural part of modern processes
We believe in a future in which payroll accounting is no longer a time-consuming, error-prone effort, but an automated, firmly integrated part of modern business processes. We are getting there step by step: calculations and trial payroll runs are live on the payroll API today – with live operation from 2027, the payroll software with all statutory filings follows.
